Marble, Limestone, Travertine and Terrazzo stone floors require different procedures in order to restore them to a near factory finish. We have many customers who require their natural stone floors to be cleaned, polished and sealed when it loses its lustre and shine.
Natural stone floors are a big investment and require maintenance to prevent costly damage and keep them looking good all year round. Natural stone floors will dull over time due to both incorrect cleaning procedures and cleaning products, dirt and grit will dull the floor causing microscopic scratches to the surface of the stone which reduces the reflective properties of the floors surface.
We can remove these scratches as part of our refurbishment and maintenance process by using a process known as ‘Diamond grinding, honing and polishing’.
Marble, Limestone, Travertine and Terrazzo Stone Restoration, Refurbishment and Maintenance Process
Lippage is a result of an adjacent tile being higher or lower than another at the grout joint.
Removing lippage requires the use of metal bonded diamond plates which coarsely grind away the stone leaving it flat but with a rough finish, the next step is to repeat the process a number of times with finer grades depending on the type of stone and the required finish matt or high gloss / polished finish.
Diamond Floor Grinding
The stone floor is grinded down with a heavy floor rotary machine fitted with course diamond pads to remove deep scratches and gouges, this will not leave the floor with a shiny surface.
Diamond Floor Honing
The stone floor is honed with a lower course grade of diamonds to either smooth out the grinding process or to refurbish an existing honed finished floor that is left smooth and flat.
A matt finish floor can be finished off with honing powders to enhance the smoothness of the surface.
Diamond Floor Polishing
Diamond floor polishing process uses finer grades of diamonds to produce a polished finish, this can be used as a maintenance process or the follow on from the honing process depending on the condition of the floor. This process will remove light and microscopic scratches from the floor that are not visible to the human eye and allows the natural crystals on the surface of the floor to reflect light more effectively.
Once the floor has been diamond polished we can enhance the floors reflective properties further by powder polishing which produces a chemical reaction with the stone to produce a high gloss or wet look finish, this helps to close the pours of the stone and makes the floor stronger and more durable.
Stone Floor Sealing
Once the stone floor has been refurbished we apply a product called “Stone Soap” to the stone floor that is specially formulated with fatty acids to seal and then maintain Marble, Limestone, Travertine and Terrazzo floors. “Stone Soap” will increase the slip resistance of the stone and reacts with the calcium developing a water insoluble and dirt repellent surface making it easier to clean.
