The project

A carefully planned restoration in Chertsey

This restoration was carried out at the Grade II* listed Botleys Mansion near Chertsey, Surrey. Retaining some of the aged grout helped preserve the character of the historic floor, although further specialist re-grouting could be carried out in the future. The clients were extremely pleased with the restoration, and we expect to return for future maintenance.

The starting condition informed the restoration approach.

The condition

The floor before restoration

The main entrance limestone and black marble floor had become dull, dirty and yellowed following years of incorrect maintenance. An unsuitable topical seal had been applied to the natural stone, creating an unnatural, plastic-looking finish. Two large scratches within the surface coating were also visible.

The restoration process

A carefully controlled working sequence

Repairs and preparation

The old surface coating needed to be completely removed before restoration could begin. Scratches and surface imperfections within the black marble inlays were diamond honed out. Some areas of aged grout could ideally benefit from future re-grouting, but this was outside the scope and budget of this project.

Restoration stage 2

We carefully stripped the existing seal using specialist stripping products, floor pads and manual scraping where required.

Restoration stage 3

Once removed, the limestone was deep cleaned and the black marble was diamond honed, diamond skimmed and progressively polished.

Restoration stage 4

The floor was then powder polished and professionally sealed to protect the restored natural stone.

Project planning

Access, scheduling and site controls

Removing the old coating was considerably more labour intensive than standard marble or limestone restoration. Aggressive pads could not be used because of the risk of damaging the natural stone underneath, so many areas required careful manual work. The complete restoration took two technicians five days.

The outcome

The completed result

The transformation dramatically improved the main entrance. The yellowed, artificial-looking coating was removed and the natural character of the limestone and black marble was restored. The polished marble produced a beautiful reflective finish, with the chandelier reflecting across the floor particularly impressively during the evening.
