Stone floor problems

Marble, Limestone and Travertine floors, without the correct level of cleaning and maintenance, will deteriorate over time, losing their original high gloss finish and becoming lifeless, dull and dirty.

This is usually due to continuous foot traffic grinding dirt and grit into the floor creating microscopic scratches which reduce the floor’s natural reflective properties.

Food and drink stains, etch marks, watermarks, limescale, dull spots and dirty grout lines contribute to the floor’s deterioration and soiled appearance.

Cleaning company

Unqualified and poorly trained cleaners and cleaning companies are often the cause of damage to floors as they don’t have the experience, correct products and equipment to maintain and protect natural stone floors.

Using high alkaline or acidic cleaning products will damage the floor surface bringing on early floor restoration.

Fortunately, we have everything needed to take care of stone floors putting right these problems, keeping the floor looking great.

Stone floor cleaning process

How to clean Marble, Limestone and Travertine floors?

Marble, Limestone and Travertine floor cleaning and restoration depends on the type, finish and condition of the floor.

Our experienced floor cleaner will deep clean the floor tiles and grout lines, remove stains, etch marks and dull spots, resin repair cracks and holes before diamond honing and diamond polishing the floor surface to remove light scratches.

Once this is completed our floor cleaner will use various grades of diamonds to polish the floor to provide a clean and polished finish before powder polishing the floor to produce that high-polished, near mirror finish.

Once all the works have been completed on the floor we seal the floor with a natural stone floor sealer to help protect the floor.

Check out our photo gallery page for examples of our work.

Stone floor restoration

Floor Restoration and Maintenance – This process is the most common and usually required when the floor surface is dull and dirty but generally in a good condition with only light scratches.

Our floor cleaning team will deep clean the tiles and grout lines, repair cracks and holes, diamond hone out stains, etch marks, dull spots and light scratches before diamond polishing the floor to provide a satin polished finish.

If a high-polished finish is required we use our chemical process of powder polishing the floor that provides a mirror-like high polished finish.

Once all the works have been carried out we protect the floor with a natural stone floor sealer on completion.

Floor Restoration – This process is usually required when the floor is in a very poor condition and needs a lot of work repairing damage and removing deep scratches and gouges.

Our floor cleaning team will repair the damage, resin repair holes and cracks, remove lippage, diamond grind and diamond hone the surface to remove deep scratches and gouges.

Once the floor has been repaired we diamond polish the floor with various grades of diamonds to provide a polish finish, if a high polished finish is required we use our chemical process of powder polish the floor to provide a high-gloss polished finish before sealing with a natural stone floor sealer on completion.

Diamond grinding

A process of using a floor rotary machine containing course grade diamonds to remove deep gouges and scratches.

Diamond honing

A process of using a floor rotary machine with medium grade diamonds to produce a smooth flat finish removing grinding marks, light scratches and etch marks.

Diamond polishing

A process of using a floor rotary machine with various grades of polishing diamonds to produce a highly polished finish.

Powder polishing or Crystallization is a chemical reaction with the calcium carbonate surface of the stone that produces a high gloss mirror finish and the final process after diamond polishing.

Lippage is the removal of stone edges that are higher than the adjacent edges giving the floor surface an uneven appearance.

We use special coarse grade diamonds to flatten the raised stone edges to provide an even finish.

Most natural stone floor sealers are below the surface sealers called impregnating sealers that do not alter the original finish. They are highly recommended for newly installed floors to help protect the floor at installation stage and to prevent grout bleed.

Impregnating seals are designed to be absorbed by the stone to fill up its pores reducing its absorbency rate which helps prevent possible accidental spills resulting in stains from being absorbed by the stone.

We manually clean every grout line with a grout brush, this attention to detail provides us with the best grout cleaning results.

Stain removal

We use various stain removing products, diamond discs and poultice methods to remove dull spots, etch marks, food and drink stains.

Scratch removal

We diamond grind and hone out deep and light scratches.

Crack repairs

We repair cracks by filling with an epoxy resin before honing and polishing the surface to help match the existing stone finish.

Pits and holes

We manually clean out pits and holes, resin fill holes before honing and polishing to a smooth finish.

Stone floor maintenance

Let us worry about your floor!

Once the floor has been cleaned and restored, we will send you a copy of our Natural Stone Floor Maintenance Guide and add you to our floor maintenance list, we will then contact annually and remind you when your floor requires maintenance.

Maintenance frequency depends on the floor type, finish and the amount of use the floor receives.

We recommend Marble, Limestone and Travertine floors are cleaned and maintained every 6 to 12 months.

Floor survey

We provide FREE surveys to find out the size, type and condition of your floor.

This information allows us to provide a free quote including our cleaning, polishing and maintenance recommendations.

For speed, you can send us photos via email, text or WhatsApp which allows us to give you a budget quote before carrying out a survey.

Good photos would be ones taken from the doorway into the room and a close up of two tiles together. This will give us a good idea of the type of floor you have, its size and condition.

Marble is a metamorphic rock formed from Limestone at very high temperatures and pressures within the Earth’s crust.

Marble comes in many different colours including natural veining, textures and patterns.

Marble has a crystalline structure and can be polished to improve its shine and, when refined, makes it less susceptible to water damage. However, Marble is made of calcium carbonate which is very susceptible to acidic agents that will dull and etch its surface.

Travertine is a form of Limestone deposited by mineral springs and comes in a honeycomb structure that can be filled or unfilled.

Main problems

Dull polished finish
Floor scratches and gouges
Dirty tiles
Dirty grout lines
Dirty pits and holes
Yellowing
Etch marks, water and ring marks
Food and drink stains
Lippage (Uneven laid tiles)
Crack repairs
Missing fill, pits and holes

Limestone is a natural sedimentary rock formed from the remains of tiny shells and micro skeletons deposited on the seabed then compressed to form solid rock.

Limestone is porous and needs to be sealed at installation stage and resealed regularly to keep it protected.

Limestone is usually white and creamy in colour but natural impurities in the rock such as iron oxide can colour it, Limestone can have both a matt or a polished finish, Limestone is softer than Marble and therefore prone to wear and sensitivity to Alkaline.

Regular cleaning and sealing are important to keep Limestone floors in good condition.

Vanity units and worktop surfaces become dull, dirty and lose their polished finish due to dull spots, etch marks and staining caused by cosmetics, perfumes, aftershaves, foods, drinks and the incorrect use of cleaning products.

Problems

Dull polished finish
Etch marks, ring and watermarks
Stains
Scratches and chips

Our cleaning team will diamond hone and diamond polish to remove stains, etch marks and dull spots before adding a wax protective polish finish to help protect the surface and enhance the finish.
