Arundel Cathedral – Limestone Floor Cleaning Restoration Sealing
Project details
Project: Arundel Cathedral
Contract: JCT Minor Building Works
Works: Limestone Floors – Deep cleaning, Restoration, Polishing and Sealing (800m2)
Contracted by Arundel Cathedral’s lead Architects to provide a quote and recommendations to restore Limestone floors throughout Arundel Cathedral.
Tender Process:
No specification was provided, so we produce a Limestone floor condition report containing our cleaning and restoration recommendations.
On winning the contract, we agreed on the programme of works and supplied our Health and Safety files for the project.
Problem
A 145-year-old Limestone floor that had become dull, dirty, discoloured and heavily stained from candle wax and high levels of foot traffic.
The floor required a lot of care to make sure it was not damaged.
We carried out several site visits to carry out test cleans to make sure we achieved the best results while looking after the floor at the same time.
We needed to remove the ingrained dirt from the Limestone tiles without damaging them.
The natural products to clean Limestone tiles were not able to remove this ingrained dirt, so we produced a system that was able to remove this dirt allowing us to move onto the next stage of the restoration process.
A challenging project was working in the Cathedral while it was still open to the general public.
Solution
We use a team of 5No men over four weeks, splitting the Cathedral up into six sections.
Working on a section at a time allowed visitors to enjoy the Cathedral reducing disruption.
We started by moving benches and locking off areas to pedestrians applying warning and alternative route signs.
Our team manually removed 145 years of candle wax from the floor.
Using both our mechanical and chemical cleaning processes, our team deep cleaned and remove the heavy ingrained dirt and stains.
Once cleaned, our team diamond-honed out all etch marks and stains before diamond polishing and applying the Limestone sealer on completion.
Summary
Arundel Cathedral was a fantastic place to work; we enjoyed our time working on this project, everybody was so friendly including the visiting public which showed a lot of interest in our restoration of the Limestone floor.
We would highly recommend a visit, and you will be amazed by the size and history of Arundel Cathedral.
It is essential to have a well-maintained Limestone floor to maintain its original appearance and provide a clean and healthy environment.
