Genuine restoration project · Guildford
This limestone floor restoration project was carried out at a residential property in Guildford, Surrey. The limestone had been newly installed as part of a new-build property, but unfortunately the floor had been left looking dull and unfinished following the construction work.
As is often the case with newly installed natural stone floors, the limestone had accumulated building debris, surface scuffs, marks and widespread grout residue. Instead of displaying the clean, natural appearance expected from a newly laid limestone floor, the surface looked cloudy, marked and generally unrefined.
The client wanted the floor professionally cleaned and restored to remove the construction residue and bring out the natural beauty and lustre of the newly installed limestone.
Deep Cleaning the New Limestone Floor
We began the limestone restoration process with a thorough deep clean of the tiles and grout lines.
New-build floors can accumulate a surprising amount of contamination during construction. Plaster dust, building debris, grout residue, dirt and other materials can become embedded on the surface of natural stone before the property is completed.
Standard mopping is often unable to remove this type of contamination effectively, particularly when grout or construction residues have dried onto the surface.
We therefore professionally deep cleaned the limestone to remove the accumulated dirt and building residue and prepare the stone for the mechanical restoration stages.
Removing Grout Residue and Building Marks
One of the main problems with this floor was the widespread grout residue left behind following installation.
Grout residue can leave limestone looking cloudy, patchy and dull, significantly affecting the appearance of an otherwise newly installed floor.
We carefully worked across the floor to remove these residues along with the surface scuffs, marks and other contamination left behind during the building process.
Once these residues had been removed, the natural colour and character of the limestone became much more visible.
**Diamond Skimming the Limestone Floor**
Following the deep cleaning process, we diamond skimmed the limestone using specialist diamond abrasives.
Diamond skimming allowed us to mechanically refine the surface of the stone, removing remaining marks and imperfections that could not be corrected through cleaning alone.
This process also helped create a smooth and consistent surface across the newly laid limestone, providing the correct foundation for the polishing stages that followed.
Diamond Polishing the Limestone
Once the surface had been properly prepared, we progressively diamond polished the limestone floor.
Using increasingly finer grades of specialist diamond abrasives, we refined the surface of the stone to improve its smoothness, clarity and natural lustre.
Unlike coatings or artificial surface treatments, professional diamond polishing works directly with the limestone itself, enhancing the natural appearance of the stone.
As we progressed through the polishing stages, the dull and unrefined appearance was replaced by a much cleaner, smoother and more consistent finish.
Restoring the Natural Limestone Finish
The objective with this project was not simply to clean a dirty floor. Although the limestone was newly installed, the construction and installation process had prevented the stone from displaying the finish it should have had from the outset.
By combining professional deep cleaning, grout residue removal, diamond skimming and diamond polishing, we were able to properly finish the limestone and bring out its natural character.
The result was a significant improvement, transforming a dull, marked and unfinished-looking new-build floor into a clean and professionally finished limestone surface.
Three-Day Limestone Restoration Project
This limestone floor cleaning and restoration project took one technician three days to complete correctly.
Working methodically through each stage allowed us to remove the building debris, grout residue, scuffs and surface marks before refining and polishing the limestone to achieve the required finish.
The completed floor finally had the clean, smooth and natural appearance expected from newly installed limestone and was ready to complement the rest of the new home.
