Terrazzo Stair Restoration in Brighton – Project Photos

This major **terrazzo staircase restoration in central Brighton, East Sussex**, involved restoring **eight floors of terrazzo stairs and landings** within an office building on Queens Road.

Years of heavy foot traffic and unsuitable cleaning methods had left the terrazzo dull, discoloured, heavily scratched and pitted. There were also cracks, holes and damaged stair nosings requiring repair, along with years of old mop slurry and ingrained dirt accumulated around the edges of the landings and where the terrazzo met the skirtings.

**Deep Cleaning Eight Floors of Terrazzo**

We thoroughly deep cleaned the terrazzo stairs and landings to remove years of ingrained dirt, staining and cleaning residues.

Particular attention was required around the edges of the landings and skirtings, where years of mopping had left a substantial build-up of dirty slurry and residue.

The restoration wasn't limited to the stair treads. We also cleaned and restored the **risers, sides and undersides of the open terrazzo stairs, stair strings and skirtings**, ensuring the complete staircase received attention rather than just the most visible walking surfaces.

**Terrazzo Repairs & Stair Nosing Restoration**

There were a number of holes, cracks and damaged areas throughout the staircase. These were repaired using resin and selected terrazzo chippings where appropriate to help the repairs blend with the existing floor.

Some of the damaged **stair nosings also required rebuilding and reshaping**, restoring their profile before the polishing stages could be completed.

**Diamond Skimming & Polishing the Terrazzo**

The stair treads and risers were diamond skimmed to reduce scratches, refine the worn surface and prepare the terrazzo for polishing.

We then progressively diamond polished the terrazzo, bringing back the natural colour and decorative aggregate and creating a cleaner, brighter and much more consistent appearance throughout all eight floors.

A penetrating stone sealer was applied on completion to help protect the restored terrazzo.

**Four-Week Commercial Terrazzo Restoration**

The entire project took approximately **four weeks to complete** during an active office refurbishment.

With numerous other trades working throughout the building, access was one of the biggest challenges. We frequently had to stop work to allow contractors to travel safely up and down the stairs, while maintaining the required fire-escape routes.

To help keep the project moving, we also carried out **weekend and out-of-hours working**, when fewer trades were on site and larger sections of the staircase could be restored without interruption.

The before, during and after photographs show the scale of the transformation across the stairs and landings. The finished terrazzo was dramatically cleaner, repaired and polished, with a much more consistent appearance throughout all eight floors.

This was a challenging but extremely rewarding project, and we really enjoyed bringing such an extensive original terrazzo staircase back to life in the **centre of Brighton**.
